Be the Ice Sculptor

Ordinary Folk, an exceptional animation studio based in Vancouver, joined forces with School of Motion, the premier online school in the motion design community, to celebrate the recently updated Animation Bootcamp by creating the final storyboard for the class.

The brief was to animate 21 storyboards using a provided 34-second voiceover.

Process

The most important consideration throughout the entire process was to respect the original design with minimal additions. This involved a thorough analysis of each storyboard, understanding its relationship within the overall narrative, and imagining the designer’s intended movements for each frame.
For example, frames seven to nine convey the main message of the story: the master valuing the higher order of crafting.
Three boxes stacked from largest to smallest already suggested a vertical movement, representing higher matters, which was used for the master’s upward movement. Leaning her body backward at the top was a small addition to show her confidence in the values she stands for.
Noticing small rectangular shapes consistently placed across these three frames, horizontal movement was indicated, and these shapes were utilized as flying elements that suddenly stop to emphasize the message of frame nine, ‘To Craft.’
